Wild Hydrogen Secures Innovate UK Smart Grant to Advance Carbon‑Negative Hydrogen Tech. Its RiPR Technology converts waste into energy.
Cheltenham, UK – [Date] – Wild Hydrogen, a cleantech company pioneering carbon‑negative hydrogen and biomethane production, has been awarded a prestigious Innovate UK Smart Grant to support the further development and commercialization of its proprietary technology.
The Innovate UK Smart Grants programme supports “game‑changing and world‑leading R&D innovations” by micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with strong prospects of commercial success. While the exact award amount to Wild Hydrogen has not been publicly disclosed, the grant is expected to accelerate key development milestones in its roadmap.
Wild Hydrogen’s core technology, known as the Rising Pressure Reformer (RiPR), converts wet biogenic materials — such as agricultural residues, compost, or other biomass streams — into usable hydrogen, biomethane, biochar, and captured carbon dioxide. Because the feedstock is biogenic and the CO₂ can be captured, the process has the potential to deliver carbon‑negative fuel outputs.
The Smart Grant award arrives at a pivotal time for the company. Wild Hydrogen is concurrently planning and establishing its first demonstrator site at Meadow Mill, Eastington (near Stroud, Gloucestershire). The site will serve as a pilot installation to validate the RiPR technology in real-world conditions, showcase its scalability, and engage with industry partners, local stakeholders, and regulators. According to the firm, operations at the site will focus on small‑scale testing, demonstration, and optimization, with minimal environmental impact and noise.
The company is also collaborating with gas network operator Wales & West Utilities to evaluate how its biogenic-derived hydrogen and biomethane output might support decarbonization pathways for existing gas infrastructure and future hydrogen blending strategies. In addition, Wild Hydrogen has exceeded its recent crowdfunding campaign target, raising £610,001.84 from over 600 investors, helping fuel ongoing development and scale‑up efforts.
Beyond the grant, Wild Hydrogen has earned recognition in the clean energy and innovation community. The company won the Clean Superpower: Net Zero Award at the SETsquared Innovation Showcase, further validating its technology and commercial promise. Wild Hydrogen also participates in the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII) demonstration framework, one of four UK trials selected for support by Innovate UK and associated institutions to accelerate deployment of next-generation hydrogen technologies.
With backing from this Smart Grant and momentum from its fundraising and partnerships, Wild Hydrogen aims to press forward with scaling RiPR toward its first commercial demonstrator, poised for deployment as early as 2026. The company sees itself positioning Gloucestershire and the wider UK as a hub for carbon‑negative hydrogen innovation — bridging the gap between laboratory concepts and industrial decarbonization. Wild Hydrogen is listed on the Davos Technology Platform. See LINK
